It has been an incredibly-packed week and time has just flown by. I’ve been working intensely to wrap a new book on the Certified Business Analysis Professional certification and updating my PMP Study Guide and a new version of the CAPM/PMP All-in-One Book. Soon you’ll also see four new articles I’ve written for the fine folks at InformIT on the PMI project management certifications.
In preparation for my upcoming move I’ve been purging junk, old gadgets, and stuff. It’s amazing how much stuff I’ve accumulated over the past ten years. I don’t remember purchasing so many televisions, computer monitors, and all these magazines. Why do I have so much stuff? Saturday will be a giant garage sale at my house: almost everything’s a dollar or five dollars. It’s refreshing to know that someone else can use the things that I don’t need. I hate to waste things, but I just don’t need all these belongings. And who owns what? Do I own these things or do these things own me?
I ventured to the attic yesterday, thankfully there’s not much there. I did find, however, some boxes that have cooked up there for the last ten years. These boxes are still taped up from the last move, ignored, and banished for a decade. What’s inside? Why did I ever feel the need to keep these things and then store them in the attic? I found old books, floppy disks, toys, sweaters, manuals to outdated software, and college papers. Did I really think that I was going to need these things later in my life? I enjoyed this Time Magazine article about living with just 100 things.
It’s been refreshing to share my news about my move to Florida. So many old friends have reconnected and we’ve met for lunch, watched a baseball game, or made plans to spend time together this month. I’ll miss them all so much though they’re welcome to Florida anytime. A few of my friends have been having some tough times in their lives. I feel for them, pray for them, and hope they’ll keep pressing on and learn from these experiences.
When you get down to it, all that we really have is one another.
